The Dhamma Vihara is the monastery of CMBT (Centro Mexicano del Buddhismo
Theravada A.C.). The monastery was inaugurated on January 30, 1999 under the
spiritual guidance of most Venerable U Silananda. The monastery is located
on a property of 22 acres of enormous natural beauty in the mist forest in
the County of Jilotepec near Xalapa, the capital of the State of Veracruz. It is a
rural place, isolated, with a comfortable climate year-round, ideal for the
intensive practice of meditation and the study of the Buddha's teachings.
Dhamma Vihara has two main buildings. The first has two
floors and includes separate rooms for monastics and lay visitors, bathrooms,
a meditation hall, a library and a study room. In the new building there is
a large and fully equipped kitchen, a dining hall for both monastics and lay
people, a laundry room, a storeroom, guest rooms and bathrooms. Both
buildings have electricity and running water.
The Dhamma Vihara following an ancient Buddhist tradition
of generosity (dana) offers at no cost the
teachings of its instructors. All this is possible thanks to the generous
contributions of its benefactors, friends and visitors. The Dhamma Vihara
is the first Theravada Buddhist monastery in Spanish-speaking
countries.
